A little bit about how I got into programming:
I attended the University of Texas (Hook em!) where I studied biology and then pursued a Masters degree in marine biology. I’ve always been drawn to science and understanding how things work and fit together, from the brain and body to entire ecosystems. However after beginning a career in environmental consulting, I still felt I hadn’t found the right path for me, until I began programming.
I took the opportunity to learn coding while in a sales role with a tech company here in Austin. From there I knew I had to pursue a programming career and so I completed a fullstack developer program at UT. It was the most challenging thing I had ever done, but had no idea at the time that it was just the beginning. After months of studying and several failed interviews, I landed a job as an associate software engineer for an eduction tech company in January 2019; and then the challenge really begun. I'll be honest, the first 8 months were rough. But eventually I made it over the learning curve I'm proud of how far I've come.
In this role I am a true full stack engineer. In past projects I have worked with our PHP backend writing SQL queries, or in one of our microservices writing Typescript code and working with Serverless and AWS. I've built out pixel perfect front end features from design mocks, including adding several React components to our design system. Some additional tools and technologies I have experience with include: Node, Git, JIRA, testing frameworks such as Jest/Jasmine/Enzyme and PHPUnit, state management technologies like Redux and MobX, backend tools like Postman and SequelPro, and AWS technologies including Lambda, Step Functions, and S3 Buckets.
Ultimately however, my passion is in the front end where I have an eye for detail and design, and enjoy the freedom to be creative. More recently I've fallen into the world of data visualization where the possibilities for expression seem endless! Check out my blocks to see what I'm working on.
